The village of Gialova is located on the shores of Navarino Bay (or the Bay of Pilos), a large bay almost entirely enclosed by the island of Sphacteria on its western edge. The name Gialova is a combination of the greek word ‘αιγιαλός or γιαλός’ meaning ‘shore’ and the turkish word ‘ova’ meaning a ‘plain’ or ‘lowland’.
Today Gialova is a small tourist village (official population 275) with a pleasant beachfront road with a number of restaurants, bars and shops. The beach at Gialova is sheltered and is perfect for a refreshing swim in warm, calm waters.
Part of the prefect of Messenia, Gialova enjoys the mild climate common to the western Peloponnese and is a year round destination, although the summer months (as anywhere on the Greek coast) are of course the most popular and busy.
